About
The 20-HIM-A6 is a portable Human Interface Module (HIM) designed for seamless interaction with variable frequency drives (VFDs). It enables users to start, stop, and adjust drive operations, monitor real-time parameters like speed and fault codes, and configure drive settings for specific applications
My Task
My task was to redesign the HIM interface, reorganizing its controls and information for clearer labeling, logical grouping, and intuitive navigation, ensuring a more user-friendly experience for technicians and engineers.
Team
Collaborated closely with a cross-functional team of 30+ professionals, including engineers, system designers, product architects and project stakeholders, to understand the HIM's operational flow and redesign its interface for improved usability.

Understanding the Problem
The HMI interface, launched in 2010, had become complex and outdated over time, leading to user confusion and reduced operational efficiency. By 2021, when I joined the project, the need for modernization was critical. My goal was to transform the interface into an intuitive, user-friendly system while addressing years of accumulated usability issue

We conducted a Comparative Usability Evaluation with 12 participants testing our product and competitors. Key findings included pain points like hidden features and strengths like clear navigation and responsive interfaces. These insights drove actionable improvements, guiding our design process for a more user-friendly experience.

Lessons and More
Flexibility is Key to Success
Seamlessly transitioned between three design tools within a single project, maintaining design consistency and team collaboration without delays.

Impact happens outside the "design box"
When I stepped outside my comfort zone to help with CAD modeling, I saw firsthand how cross-functional collaboration creates better solutions. The biggest lesson?
Proactively asking "How can I help?" leads to stronger outcomes than just focusing on my own tasks.
